Today, tooth-colored dental fillings are becoming more and more common, often chosen over their metal amalgam counterparts for their enhanced cosmetic and restorative abilities. Cavities (which fillings are designed to treat) are the most common dental malady, and tooth-colored fillings can help most patients restore their smiles without leaving obvious slivers of metal that can diminish smile’s appeal.
Are tooth-colored dental fillings really invisible?
As their name suggests, tooth-colored fillings are made from an acrylic resin that can be tinted to match the color and shade of your tooth. Unlike metal, the composite resin provides a restoration that blends in with your tooth’s structure, and is virtually invisible to everyone.
How do they perform compared to metal fillings?
Besides their appearance, composite resin can sometimes improve the functionality of your filling. The material can be more securely bonded to your tooth’s structure than metal fillings, which creates a more effective seal against the bacteria that lead to tooth decay. This significantly reduces the risks of your dental filling failing, and improves the health and strength of your tooth.
Are tooth-colored fillings always better than amalgam ones?
Though they are typically more effective for certain teeth, resin fillings are not always the most effective solution. For instance, molars at the back of the mouth may require metal fillings to better absorb the increased pressure of your bite. The only way to know which dental filling is preferred is to have your cavity evaluated so we can assess the damage and recommend an appropriate restoration.
