Nervous Girl Root Canal TreatmentTooth loss can be a frustrating experience for many adults. But it doesn’t have to mean the end of your smile, or confidence. Dental implants are a secure form of restoration, one that takes advantage of the customizability of dental porcelain to create a complete, natural-looking smile. They can also enable you to eat and speak the way you did before your tooth loss, giving you back the kind of stable and beautiful smile you’ll be proud to display.

What Is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants can be used to complete a smile after a single tooth has been lost, or if several have fallen out. However, your mouth does need to be in good oral health, in order for the implant to be a success.

Dental implants involve two equally important parts, a porcelain crown that is used to cosmetically complete your smile, and a titanium post that stabilizes the implant. The post also functions as your natural tooth root would, helping to nourish your jaw each time you bite.

Dental porcelain, like that used in many modern crowns, is strong and stain-resistant, much like your natural teeth’s enamel, making for a restoration that most people won’t even notice. This is one of the primary reasons many patients prefer dental implants to other forms of restorative treatment, such as partial dentures or dental bridges.

Did You Know…?

  • During an initial procedure your titanium post will be carefully placed. This will take time to properly heal, but once it has, it provides the healthiest way to complete your smile, because of the added nourishment it can supply to your jaw.
  • Failure to restore a smile after tooth loss can lead to further problems down the road. Your other teeth will likely try to shift into the created gap, if you do not seek restoration. That can cause severe alignment issues in many cases.
  • It’s also important that your dentist help to determine the cause of your tooth loss, to prevent further problems. If you lost your tooth due to gum disease, for instance (which is the leading cause of adult tooth loss in America) periodontal treatment may be necessary to ensuring you keep your other teeth.
